Signs of the Day of Judgment in Islam
Introduction
Belief in the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah) is one of the pillars of faith in Islam. Every Muslim believes that this world will end, that all people will be raised again, and that everyone will stand before Allah to account for their deeds. The Quran returns to this truth on page after page, because it gives life its meaning: nothing we do is lost, and no injustice will go unanswered.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also described a number of signs that will appear before the Hour — some small, some great. In this article we will look at what the Quran and authentic hadith say about these signs, carefully and calmly, and most importantly: how a believer should respond to them. The purpose of this knowledge is not fear or fortune-telling; it is preparation.
The Hour: Its Knowledge Belongs to Allah Alone
The first and most important fact about the Day of Judgment is that no one knows when it will happen — not any prophet, not any angel, and certainly no human being. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour.” (Quran 31:34)
People asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the Hour, and Allah revealed: “They ask you about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say: Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him.” (Quran 7:187)
This is why Islam completely rejects date-setting. Every person in history who claimed to know the date of the end of the world was wrong, and every future claim will be wrong too. Even the angel Jibreel did not know it: in the famous hadith of Jibreel, when he asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the Hour, the Prophet replied, “The one who is asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking.” (Sahih Muslim) What the Prophet did share were signs — indications that remind the believers to stay awake and prepared.
The Minor Signs
The minor signs are events that appear long before the Hour. Many of them are moral and social changes that the Prophet (peace be upon him) foretold more than fourteen centuries ago.
In the hadith of Jibreel, when Jibreel asked about the signs of the Hour, the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned two of them: that a slave woman would give birth to her mistress, and that barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds would compete in constructing tall buildings. (Sahih Muslim) The second sign is plain to see in our age of skyscraper races in lands that were once desert shepherd country.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also spoke of the loss of trust (amanah). He said that when trust is lost, then one should await the Hour; and when he was asked how trust would be lost, he replied: “When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then await the Hour.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Other minor signs mentioned in authentic hadith include: knowledge of Islam being taken away while ignorance spreads, and the widespread presence of immorality and disobedience — the Prophet (peace be upon him) listed among the signs of the Hour that religious knowledge would decrease and ignorance would prevail. (Sahih Bukhari) Time itself was described in an authentic hadith as drawing closer, so that a year feels like a month and a month like a week. (Sahih Bukhari) Many of these signs have appeared in some form — which scholars take as a reminder that the believer should always live ready, without ever claiming to know how near or far the Hour is.
The Major Signs
The major signs are extraordinary events that will occur close to the Hour itself. The Prophet (peace be upon him) counted ten of them in one hadith, including the appearance of the Dajjal, the descent of Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), and the emergence of Ya’juj and Ma’juj. (Sahih Muslim) Here are the best-known of them, described briefly:
- The Dajjal (the false messiah): The greatest trial mankind will face. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned about him in detail and taught us to seek Allah’s protection from his fitnah in every prayer. (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) He will deceive many with wonders, but the believers will recognize him by what the Prophet described.
- The return of Isa (peace be upon him): Jesus will descend, defeat the Dajjal, and rule with justice. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Isa, son of Maryam, will descend as a just ruler. (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
- Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog): A destructive people who will spread corruption across the earth, mentioned in the Quran (18:94 and 21:96), and whom no one will be able to resist until Allah Himself destroys them.
- The Beast of the earth: Allah says: “And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them.” (Quran 27:82)
- The sun rising from the west: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the Hour will not come until the sun rises from the west — and when it does, faith will no longer benefit a soul that did not believe before. (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
These events are part of the unseen (ghayb). We believe in them because Allah and His Messenger told us — we do not need to see them, map them, or match them to headlines.
How Should a Believer Respond?
This is the most important part of the whole topic. The signs were not revealed to make us date-setters, headline-watchers, or merchants of fear. They were revealed to wake us up. The correct response has several parts:
First, hold on to the Quran and Sunnah. In times of confusion and trials, the Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed his companions back to the Book of Allah and his own example. That remains the believer’s anchor.
Second, prepare with deeds, not debates. A man once asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) when the Hour would come. The Prophet asked him in return: “What have you prepared for it?” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) That question is directed at every one of us. Prayer, charity, honesty, kindness to parents, and repentance are the real preparation.
Third, repent often and do not delay. Since no one knows his own last day — let alone the world’s — the wise person treats every day as a chance to return to Allah. Death is nearer to each of us than the Hour, and it asks for the same readiness.
Fourth, stay calm and do not spread panic. Fear-mongering, fake predictions, and sensational videos about the end times harm faith more than they help it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught hope as much as caution: the believer works, plants, and builds even at the end — he said that if the Hour comes while one of you has a seedling in his hand, he should plant it if he can. (Musnad Ahmad)
Conclusion
The signs of the Day of Judgment, minor and major, are real and authentically reported — but their timing and exact unfolding are known only to Allah. The believer’s job is not to calculate the end; it is to be ready for it: with sound faith, regular prayer, honest living, and constant repentance. Whoever prepares for the Hour in this way has nothing to fear from it, whenever it comes — for he will meet a Lord who is Most Merciful to those who turned back to Him.
