Khalifa Hazrat Umer (R.A)

Date of Birth:

It is unknown exactly when Umar was born. However, most people agree that Umar was born in Mecca somewhere around 580 A.D. He was roughly ten years younger than the Islamic Holy Prophet.

The family:

Umar was a member of the Quraish Adi clan. It was one of the ten Quraish clans that called Mecca home.

Umar’s lineage included the following: Umar the son of Khattab, Nufail, Abul Uzza, Riza, Ribah, Qurat, Adi, and Katb.It is unknown exactly when Umar was born. However, most people agree that Umar was born in Mecca somewhere around 580 A.D.

Umar’s father, Khattab, was one of the well-known Banu Adis members. Khantamah, the daughter of Hisham bin al-Mughirah, was Umar’s mother. Al-Mughirah was a highly esteemed Quraish figure.

A number of brothers and sisters were born to Umar. Among these, Zaid and Fatima were the most well-known. Umar and Zaid were stepbrothers with separate mothers. The two brothers, however, remained loyal to one another. Umar was deeply saddened when Zaid was later martyred at the battle of Yamama under Abu Bakr’s caliphate.  He used to say, “Whenever the wind blows from Yamama, it brings me the fragrance of Zaid.”

Umar’s real sister was FatimaSaeed bin Zaid bin Amr, her cousin, was her spouse. She was a major factor in Umar’s conversion to Islam.

Conversion to Islam:

The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was staying at the home of Arqam at the base of the Safa hill, and Umar traveled there from his sister’s house.

At the door of Arqam’s home, Umar knocked.

The guard asked, “Who comes?”

“Umar bin al-Khattab” was what Umar said.

Umar had buckled his sword, the guard noticed as he peered through the door. The guard was hesitant to open the door as a result.

“Open the door; if he comes in peace, he will be welcome,” Hamza told the guard. We can overwhelm him if he is determined to cause trouble.

Umar was taken in. Hamza asked, “Umar, what brings you here?” after grabbing him by the hem of his cloak. The Muslims surrounded Umar with their swords readied, ready to overwhelm him if he displayed any violent tendencies.

When the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) heard the commotion, he emerged from his cell. The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) remarked, “Leave him, let him come forward,” in reference to Hamza.

“Umar, how long will you stray from the path of Islam?” the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) asked as Umar moved forward. Has the moment not arrived for you to realize the reality?

“Truly, it’s time for me to see the truth,” Umar stated. I’m here to declare my faith in Islam.

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) extended his hand. “I declare that Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is the Messenger of God and that there is no other god but Allah,” Umar added, holding the hand in a reverent manner.

Muslims cried out “Allah-o-Akbar” with delight. The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) took Umar in his arms. Umar was embraced one by one by the other Muslims. The fortieth individual to convert to Islam was Umar.

On that day, Gabriel even commended the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) on Umar’s conversion. Gabriel replied: “O Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) of God, the dwellers in Heaven rejoice at the conversion of Umar and offer you their congratulations” .
